Our Friday meeting promises to be an exciting time. Not only will our guest speaker, Michelle Moore, bring us into the digital age with a presentation on social networking, but members will have the chance to vote for new officers. Being an officer for COVAAC is an incredible experience. Not only do you get to be an advocate for volunteers, but you have the opportunity to work closely with others who feel the same way about the role of volunteer management in today’s world. And, you will have the opportunity to determine future professional development activities with this organization. So, if you are thinking that maybe it would be a great thing to be an officer of COVAAC, plan to run from the floor at Friday’s meeting!

The Internet – Where the Future Volunteers All Surf

If you plan to reach the next generation of volunteers, your vocabulary should include wikis, blogs, podcasts, Face Book and YouTube – just to name a few of the venues for social computing. COVAAC invites you to attend our Annual Meeting and Spring Professional Development Day featuring Michelle Moore. Michelle is a Computer Repair Teacher at Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Center of Applied Technology South. Her most recent paper was entitled Social Computing in the Enterprise. She presented on this topic at a statewide convention for teachers using computers in April of 2007.

You don’t want to miss the wave of the future, and the internet is where the surf is high and there are lots of surfers. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project:
§                                 About 40 million Americans were browsing the web just for fun or to pass the time on a typical day in December 2005.
§                                 36% of online American adults consult Wikipedia
§                                 48% of internet users have been to video-sharing sites such as YouTube and the daily traffic to such sites on a typical day has doubled in the past year.
§                                 More teens are creating and sharing material on the internet. And 28% of online teens have blogs, up from 2004. More than half (55%) of all online American youths ages 12-17 use online social networking sites.
§                                 83% of online Americans say they have used the internet to seek information about their hobbies and 29% do so on a typical day.

If you feel uncomfortable with words like wiki, blog, podcast, and YouTube – then this is the perfect opportunity for you to learn about the tools that our future volunteers are already using.
